The Green Party of Arkansas, the only progressive political party in Arkansas, today announces candidates for Governor and U. S. Senate.  Josh Drake, Hot Springs attorney will campaign for the nomination for governor and Mark Swaney of Huntsville will campaign for the nomination for U. S. Senate.  Both men are long time Green Party activists and former candidates for the Green Party, and each promises a lively campaign.  The Green Party of Arkansas will hold its nominating convention on February 8th in Little Rock at a place to be determined and soon to be announced.  All other prospective candidates for Green Party are urged to contact the Green Party immediately.

Each candidate plans to emphasize social justice and environmental responsibility in their campaigns.

Green Party of Arkansas Nominating Convention February 8, 2014

The Green Party of Arkansas will hold its nominating convention for the 2014 general election on Saturday February the 8th in Little Rock Arkansas at a location to be announced.  The GPA ballot access drive is continuing and is on schedule to meet the goal of obtaining full ballot status in 2014.  Therefore GPA is going ahead with plans for its convention.  All those persons who are interested in being candidates for office on the Green Party ballot line in November 2014 are urged to contact Mark Swaney at mswaney@madisoncounty.net as soon as possible.

Green Party of Arkansas Begins Ballot Access Drive

GPA has started its 5th successful ballot access drive.  The drive began on July 25th, 2013 and will continue until October 22nd, 2013.  During the 90 day period, the Green Party must gather the names of 10,000 valid voters in order to qualify for full ballot status according to state law.  However, to be sure that there are 10,00 valid signatures, GPA will have to collect more than 10,000 raw (unchecked) signatures.  Without full ballot status, no Green candidates can appear on the ballot in Arkansas for voters to consider.  To date GPA has collected over 2,000 signatures.  GPA needs your help!  If you are willing to be a volunteer petitioner, please contact Mark Swaney at mswaney@madisoncounty.net).

The Green Party of Arkansas has fielded candidates in each of the last four elections at all levels – federal, state, and local.  The Party is being required to collect signatures constantly because of a state law that requires that to maintain ballot status, the party’s candidate for either Governor or President must receive at least 3% percent of the vote.  If you are a Green voter, please be sure to vote for the Green Party candidate for governor in the election in November of 2014.  Doing so increases the chances that the Green Party will not have to again use scarce resources to be back on the ballot in 2016.

The Green Party of Arkansas supports the lawsuit filed Tuesday April 16 by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which seeks to overturn the recently passed bills in the Arkansas legislature that outlaw abortions as early as the beginning of the 12th week of pregnancy.  The Green Party of Arkansas (GPA)is a pro-choice political organization, as is the Green Party of the United States, with which the GPA is affiliated.  GPA is confident that the ACLU lawsuit will succeed in striking down the new law in Arkansas, as it is clearly unconstitutional, violating as it does the Roe Vs Wade decision of 1973.

The Roe Vs Wade decision is based on the finding of the Supreme Court that the U S Constitution’s guarantee of liberty includes a woman’s right to privacy, and that right protects her from government interference in decisions about her family and her own health.  Those who would reverse the decision would do irreparable harm to the freedom of every American by nullifying our right to be free from government interference in our most private decisions.  The GPA applauds the ACLU and the plaintiffs, Dr. Louis Jerry Edwards, and Dr. Tom Tvedten for having the courage to stand up to the legislators who enacted this legislation.  The GPA also expresses its disappointment and disapproval of every legislator who voted to pass the challenged bills.
